Huawei Watch 4 Pro - The Best Fitness Smartwatch in 2023?
So you want to know what's new and improved on the 4th gen Huawei Watch Pro. Well, you're in the right place. Because Huawei has made several upgrades. And that's what I'm going to focus on in this video.
The display now has a curved sapphire glass dome protecting the display. It's all new and more energy-efficient LPTO AMOLED. It is now brighter than ever and has a resolution of 466x466 pixels. And to my eyes, it looks incredibly sharp.
And the domed glass makes it look very premium & almost 3D. You could definitely rock this stainless steel strap version with a business suit. The leather option & Blue Composite Strap also, which is around £50 cheaper because the body on those is steel. This Pro premium version is around £550.
However, if you don't want to rock up to the gym looking like MR T, you might want to switch out the strap to something more gym-appropriate, and Huawei makes it easy to do so with the quick-release system.
And these quick-release switches are on each link, to its incredibly easy to make size adjustments.
As you can see, the body is made of metal. It is aerospace-grade titanium, three times stronger than regular titanium. And it weighs in at 65 grams, making it 2grams heavier than Watch 3 pro….but if you're a gym goer, I'd assume it's not going to break your back... like I did the other day when I picked up a 6 pack of water in Aldi.
Yes, it's a thick smartwatch and makes all the jokes you want in the comments. But keep in mind the Watch 4 Pro is packed with tech. There's no wasted space.
It's got a built-in speaker and mic. So you can have a conversation with your watch and be cool like Michael Knight…don't know who he is? He had a self-driving car with sentient Ai in the '80s…I'll say no more.
There are two physical buttons. And the crown rotates for smooth navigation if your fingers get a bit damp…for example, if you find yourself underwater. And yes, of course, it's IP68, 5ATM rated, which means the Huawei Watch 4 can survive in depths of down to 30 meters in the ocean…. But you won't catch me down there….too many jellyfish.
The lower button is a shortcut button to your quick bar, which consists of your favourite 3 features, and it's also an electrode resting the tip of your finger on this completes the circuit for ECG measurements.
And there are GPS antennas and an e-sim built in. So you can track your activity on a map. For example, my history consists of fast walks back and forth to the local off licence. And if you activate the E-Sim, you do the unthinkable and leave your home without your phone.
There are a ton of sensors in the base, and this watch can even use its mics and depth sensors for better readings…I've never heard of that before. So that's new.

Connecting the Watch 4 Pro to an Android or iOS device is easier than ever. When you boot the watch up for the first time. You get a QR link directly to the Huawei Health app that can be securely downloaded from Huawei's official website.
One of the areas where Huawei watches shine in comparison to a lot of other smartwatches. Is the actionable data. And displaying it in a way that's easy to understand. And even has instructional exercise programs on the watch.
Regarding health tracking, you got Health Clover as an app for a quick top-level look at the progress. You also got the default classic ring system you are making towards your daily goals.
To access the settings on the watch, it's a quick Swipe down from the top. There are also valuable tools here, like the find my phone one and the ability to eject water from the speaker. The ultra-long battery mode can extend the battery to 21 days whilst still allowing calls and fitness tracking features to function.
Battery life is an area of strength for Huawei watches. You can expect around 4 or 5 days of battery life on a single charge. When the battery is depleted, a 90 min charge with the provided magnetic wireless charger will get you back to 100%.
Now navigation. A swipe left takes you to a widget screen which you can customise in the app. And here you can access Celia…Huawei's voice Ai. Which…can assist you with some of the watch's basic functionality and timers. But don't expect much from Celia…she likes to play hard to get…with more complicated requests.
When you swipe to the right, there's a bunch of helpful information and a health glance that lets you do a quick self-check-up on your vitals… there are skin temperature, also breathing exercises just in case you're not doing it right.
Sleep tracking data is also viewable on the watch, which is cool. And something I really appreciate about the Huawei health app is that it shows the data but also offers some advice on how to improve your next sleep.
This device can store music locally, and the watch has media controls. So you can go offline and still listen to music over Bluetooth without your phone. Even without the e-sim activated, GPS will track geolocation data and sync up once you reconnect to your device.
The watch can display text messages and WhatsApp messages. You can reply with handy voice typing. There's also a keyboard, and swipe inputs are recognised. However, emails will be cropped, and you can't reply from the watch.
Now let's talk wallpapers. There are a ton of them to choose from already on the watch. You can use the Huawei Health app on your phone to download more. Almost all the watch faces are always on display, and on some of the watch faces, you can customise the complications for stats that make more sense to your watch.
And you can create your own if you want, from photos and even videos.
And there are all new space faces. Or planet quest faces, as Huawei calls them. One for each planet orbiting the star…probably don't need to tell you which one.
Some of my highlights are the over 100 fitness tracking modes and training courses and the fact that they will guide you through courses like a personal trainer. I also really like the haptic motor on this. It's quite strong, so you can take advantage of every important alert. The new respiratory health test is interesting, and the ECG could certainly be life-saving, and the quick health check feature is an excellent tool for keeping an eye on things.
And then there are the space watch faces. Here's a final thought for you.
You know, once upon a time. People used light and shadow to tell the time and date. Sundials then came mechanical dials, and they worked like... And now... artificial light and shadow...
And you can see this reflected on your favourite planets...If you choose a planet quest face. It's interesting how things go full circle...Isn't it?
